The Horse Guards

Across from St James Park sits the Horse Guards, home to the Household Cavalry and London District Army commands, it was originally the formal entrance to St James Palace and only a monarch is allowed to drive through its central archway. For those of you who celebrated the royal wedding, this was the narrow archway under which passed Prince William, his future bride and the Queen before and after the wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

Horse Guards is normally guarded by troopers of the Household Cavalry, both mounted and on foot; visiting the horses is popular with tourists. Two mounted cavalry troopers are posted outside daily from 10 am to 4 pm, and are relieved every hour. Also two Troopers are posted from 10 am till 8 pm and are relieved every 2 hours. There is the changing of the guard at 11am everyday but on Sundays is brought forward to 10am.

We also noticed this oversized Ship in a Bottle and were wondering what it was all about. Here are some pictures as it is quite impressive. The installation sits on one of the large podiums to the left of the National Gallery and is called 'Nelson's Ship in a Bottle' by Yinka Shonibare, celebrating the British Empire and all its glorious victories. Weighing in at 4 tons and over 3 metres high, the bottle represents multiculturalism and ethnic wealth brought to British shores over the years.

The Changing of the Guards at Buckingham Palace has always been one of the top things to see when you visit the Capital. As you crowd around the Palace gates and wait patiently for what was is actually Guard Mounting, but is put on display in true British Pomp & Ceremony for our viewing pleasure.

Changing the Guard or Guard Mounting is the process involving a new guard exchanging duty with the old guard.

The Guard that looks after Buckingham Palace is called The Queen's Guard and is divided into two Detachments: the Buckingham Palace Detachment (responsible for guarding Buckingham Palace), and the St. James's Palace Detachment, (responsible for guarding St. James's Palace).

Come and celebrate the work of llustrator René Gruau who created iconic fashion imagery for Dior in the 1940s and 50s.The exhibition focuses on his work for Dior, with more than 40 original illustrations for Christian Dior Parfums on show, including:
Vintage perfume bottles, Sketches, Magazines and Poster adverts.

As well as beautiful illustrations, prepare to gush over John Galliano's selection of Dior haute couture dresses, including a special dress designed by Galliano in honour of Gruau.
Gruau worked for some of the most famous couture houses and style magazines of the period but is best known for his collaboration with Christian Dior, for whom he created the marketing images for Dior's first perfume, Miss Dior, in 1947. The exhibition includes some of his illustrations for Dior parfums, alongside the original bottles. Gruau's fashion illustration remains influential today and there's the opportunity to see some of his sketches, alongside some of the haute couture dresses that inspired them, providing a glamorous snapshot of the era.
The exhibition runs until 9 January. Tickets cost £6, with concessions at £5.

Lord Mayor's Show and Fireworks Display

The Lord Mayor's Show has been a long tradition marching past 800 years of London's history as it welcomes into office the new Lord Mayor of the City of London.

The three mile long parade commences at 11am travelling from travels from Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice, where the Lord Mayor takes an oath of allegiance to the sovereign before the Lord Chief Justice and the judges of the Queen's Bench Division then sets off on the return journey from Victoria Embankment to Mansion House at 1pm and returns to Mansion House at about 2.30, then the day finishes with one of London's grandest firework displays at 5 o'clock from a barge moored in the Thames between Blackfriars and Waterloo bridges.

The parade features over 6000 people including 2000 servicemen and women, 220 vehicles, 71 floats, 13 marching bands, 21 carriages including the glorious State Coach and of course the giant figures of the City's guardians Gog and Magog.

The State Coach and other officials pause at St Pauls for the Lord Mayor to receive a blessing, then while he (or perhaps one day she) takes the oath of loyalty at the Royal Courts, the whole procession reforms near Victoria Embankment ready for the return journey to Mansion House, where the newly sworn-in Lord Mayor will be greeted by the City Aldermen and Livery Company Masters.

The next Lord Mayor's Show is on 13th November 2010 and will start at 11am.
